I’ve been puzzling over Obama’s pick to be Secretary of the Interior, Sally Jewell. As The Hill has it, she
previously worked as an engineer at Mobil Oil Corp. and in banking prior to joining REI.
What sort of engineering background does she have? I really liked that Lisa Jackson, the EPA head who is leaving, had some hard-core training as a chemical engineer. After all, there’s a lot of science (especially chemistry) and engineering going on out there in the environment. As we see
Jewell holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering degree from the University of Washington, graduating in 1978.
I’ll leave it to others to verify this degree with the registrar’s office at UW. Still, I’m wondering how she ended up in banking for many years. Anyway, REI
is one of my favorite spots to shop, especially when they are having a sale!
