Iowans who got sick working for our nation’s nuclear weapons industry during the Cold War were promised that a federal program would provide them medical benefits and lump sum payments for illnesses associated with their work. …

This work was mostly on nuclear weaponry, and congressional action assuring workers of appropriate health care came in 2001. Nuclear power plant workers might also take heed. In the event of an accident, or diseases likely due to radiation but not provably so, they might not get an appropriate level of health care, even when promises have been made.
