Prisons make good training grounds, what with having a captive audience and all. The trick is providing the right motivation. Prisons of a certain size (not too big) and type (not too beyond the pale) do appear to be good places to help all concerned through green initiatives.
Mother Jones has an interesting piece on helping teach prisoners new skills by engaging them in various green endeavors, such as composting and bee-keeping.
The program they discuss is called the Sustainable Prisons Project, through Evergreen State College in Washington State.
