Over the weekend, I met a guy who told me about relatively new mattress laws requiring fire retardants in mattresses. He and his wife have been learning a lot about these laws because new mattresses they bought for their children smelled very bad, and had to be exchanged, yet the replacements also had bad odors, and appear to have been causing some breathing difficulties in one of their children.

I’ve been doing some research and have found that to meet this fire retardation requirement, many mattresses are being treated with boric acid, and probably other chemicals.  Some people are very concerned about these matters, such as the People For Clean Beds. I’m going to delve into this issue in a new series of posts.
