The Doomsday Clock was just moved back by one minute, from 5 minutes before midnight (or Armageddan) to 6 minutes before midnight.

The press release by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, which runs the Doomsday Clock, cites “unprecedented” steps being taking, saying that

For the first time since atomic bombs were dropped in 1945, leaders of nuclear weapons states are cooperating to vastly reduce their arsenals and secure all nuclear bomb-making material. And for the first time ever, industrialized and developing countries alike are pledging to limit climate-changing gas emissions that could render our planet nearly uninhabitable.

They link to a video of the clock setting, showing how it has changed over time, ending up at 6 minutes before midnight:

We Are Now at 6 Minutes to Midnight

We Are Now at 6 Minutes to Midnight

The video is without sound. What, no drumroll?

In 1953, the clock was at 2 minutes before midnight, which appears to be as close as we’ve come, but we have been as far away as 14 minutes before.

Oh, in case you are wondering: KYAGB.
