It’s Buy Nothing Day (aka Black Friday), as described here by Adbusters:

We’re asking tens of millions of people around the world to bring the capitalist consumption machine to a grinding – if only momentary – halt.

We want you to not only stop buying for 24 hours, but to shut off your lights, televisions and other nonessential appliances. We want you to park your car, turn off your phones and log off of your computer for the day.

The idea is to demonstrate the fact that the only way to save Earth, as we know it, is to consume far less.  Admirable sentiments, but I wonder how this approach is going to work out.

I don’t remember seeing Buy Nothing Day advertised on TV.  Maybe they can get the Gates Foundation to fund some ads for it next time (with software as purchase exception, of course).  Or can the news media refuse to sell the ad space?
