The PBS series, “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea” is just fantastic.   It can be viewed on-line here (after a couple of minutes of ads).

One thing this series shows is that much of what we need to do to conserve and protect the environment is sociological and political in nature.   The story of how Roosevelt and others came to save these areas in perpetuity is an amazing one.  Prior to that era, there was wholesale slaughter of wildlife and environmental destruction was rampant.  By exercising political will, these areas were saved.

Now, we have to exercise even more political will.  Massive changes are in store, and it is preferable to plan and make important changes, rather than have them foisted upon us. These changes include having to go from an individual transportation economy to one of public transportation.
