As reported last week by MSNBC and other news outlets, one woman living alone in Washington, DC was surprised to get a water bill showing usage of about 140,000 gallons in one month!  Her records showed typical usage of 3,000 gallons a month.

There’s a good rule of thumb to remember here: a family of four in the US typically uses around 5,000 gallons of water per month, on average.   It certainly pays to keep an eye on water usage, as well as water costs.  Sometimes a leaky toilet or pipe can cause water consumption to be way high.  And note that often the local water utility will be happy to send people out, for free, to check the piping if your water bill goes out of whack.  They don’t want water wasted, either.  So, keep an eye on both the usage and the billing amount on your water bill.
