Control of the drug delivery device known as the cigarette is finally about to be placed where it belongs, at the US Food and Drug Administration. As reported by UPI and others, this will happen when President Obama signs a new bill into law today.

That smoking causes cancer and other diseases has been known for many decades.  We covered the definitive link between smoking and lung cancer in an introductory course on epidemiology back when I took the course in the 70′s.   The tobacco companies, as we learned, kept a lot of data secret, and continued to put up a public claim that there were no such linkages.  They also made bogus arguments that absence of a definitive molecular mechanism of what causes lung cancer was sufficient to support their claim.  As we know, they eventually capitulated, and there was a huge settlement.  Now, we have come full circle, with the FDA taking control.
