We at Environment Memo are not attorneys, but we have a lot of experience with studying and applying environmental laws and regulations. In fact, applying these laws and regulations is part and parcel of how environmental engineers, and many environmental scientists, make a living, inasmuch as much of they work they do is driven, and directed, by what has been codified.

A good understanding of environmental law can help with many efforts, be they local, regional, or international. We are a nation of laws, after all. We have laws that address every medium: land, water, and air; as well as many aspects of pollution, including hazardous wastes, air pollution, and water and wastewater treatment. These laws have science and engineering underpinnings that also should brought to bear in their application. Thus we begin a series of posts on environmental laws and regulations, under the category Environmental Law 101.
