It’s high time we got more cars off the road, saving gas and helping fuel the push toward more and better public transportation.  One way to accomplish this is to give a real driver’s test.

Many other countries have rigorous driving tests during which the applicant must prove that they really can drive well, as opposed to meeting some very low bar involving pointing the car in a given direction and hitting the gas and brakes.  In fact, many people fail these tests the first time.

Even if real driving tests did not lead to a decrease in the number of cars, there is little doubt that the roads would be a lot safer.  But don’t hold your breath waiting for the auto industry or AAA to support this idea.
