Boxed Water claims the product is good for the environment because they use recyclable materials.  The boxes resemble milk cartons, and another claim is the empty boxes take up less space than plastic or glass bottles because the boxes can be flattened, reducing shipping costs.  The product has been getting some criticism, in part because the boxes are not reusable.

One factor left out of the debate:  a cubic foot of water weighs 62.4 pounds.  So, shipping water, soda, beer, wine, or what-have-you that is mostly water really is expensive and a drain, as it were, on the environment.  If people really want super-treated water, it is going to be far easier on the environment to have a home treatment unit, or fill bottles at grocery stores that have treatment units. As far as beer goes, buying local brews, or brewing one’s own would be the way to go (or not go, in this case, across the country).
