As the economic crisis builds, will we see mass migrations to cities in the US? That is the phenomenon in other parts of the world: people move to cities seeking opportunities that do not exist in the countryside. Shanty towns are constructed on the outskirts, and people eke out a living one way or the other. There have been reports of tent cities being built in some areas, which could be a harbinger of things to come. The cities in warmer areas are the ones most likely to experience a massive influx, if it occurs. They should be thinking about what to do. These areas that may spring up around cities are termed “peri-urban” and our international aid agencies have experience in with them in other countries. Perhaps these agencies should be consulted.
